Productivity Tool: The Best Calendar App
I’ve been waiting to share this one for a while.
One of the things that I had been wanting to find was an application that would synchronize my calendar with my task list. One of the problems that I’ve ran into is not seeing my tasks enough. My fault, I know, but I needed to find a method that made it easier to to review my tasks. Then one day, thanks to the Genius feature in the App Store on my iPhone, I came across Smart Time by Left Coast Logic. This App turned out to be everything I wanted, and more.
This is a program that is first and foremost, a calendar. Whoop-dee-do right. This calendar system is actually really good. It syncs with Google Calendars, which can then be synced to iCal or Outlook, so you can still sync your iPhone calendar with your computer (good). Unlike the iCal that came preloaded on the iPhone, you can rearrange your schedule simply by tapping and holding on an event, then dragging it to the proper time (win).
The big bonus with this App compared to other calendar Apps is that you can list tasks ON the calendar as well. For example, if I need to write an article on Thursday, I can set the reminder, tell it how long the project should take, and it will find the earliest time slot on my Thursday calendar where I have the available time to complete the task. If I don’t get to it at that particular time, then it simply gets moved down my day until I do get to it. If I’m not going to get to the task, or just don’t want to do it, I tap “Defer” and input a new date for the task.
I use this calendar according to the GTD method. I don’t put all my tasks on this calendar, only the date specific ones. I maintain a separate list for my tasks that don’t have to be done by any specific time. This way I get the hard landscape of my day when I review in the morning, I know what I need to get done today, where I need to be, and how much time everything should take. I also know how much time I have left for other things, like my normal task list, and goofing off.
It’s a little pricier than other Apps on the App Store, however having used it now for a couple months, I found the price well worth paying. There is a free version (no syncing) that you should definitely play around with as you consider this great App. God bless.

SmartList actually shows tasks with both durations, and without. And it shows you how many of the ones with Durations you can get done today. It gives you the added flexibility of allowing you to change the length of your day, on the fly. That way, if you have some important tasks that you need to get done today, you can just change the length of your day.
SmartList also has a recurring ‘shopping’ list with some nifty features. Check it out. We’d love a review.
